No WiFi on BlackBerry Storm…WTF??!Posted on September 23rd, 2008 2 comments
The “unoffical” specs of the BlackBerry Storm have been leaked on the CrackBerry forums. They look quite impressive and get things pretty exciting. But for one thing, no WiFi. Possibly a deal breaker for me. Specs below, followed by a jumbled rant.

- UTMS/HSDPA/HSUPA: 2100MHZ

I live in an area that gets little to no service. I like using my smartphone for Internet radio. It’s great to stream music/podcasts while doing yard work. With no WiFi and crappy Verizon service at home, I’m now officially torn about what to do with the Storm.
I need your thoughts on this.
Oh wow. That’s not good if it’s true. Hopefully it’s really America’s best network otherwise some of the supercool features are going to be limited.
I will say though that I don’t use Wi-Fi as much as I thought I would. Of course that could just be because I live in an apt. As you describe your in the yard type uses, I could definitely see this as a problem.
Does this bring the Bold, Xperia, and/or Android back into the fold? Or is there a way around no Wi-Fi? It’s definitely surprising that RIM left it out…I mean even Palm phones can do Wi-Fi. Sounds like Verizon didn’t want to compete with Wi-Fi use since it doesn’t make sense that the Bold would get WiFi but somehow the Storm couldn’t.
I’m destined to be on BB before the end of year. In fact, I’m already on borrowed time, so I need to make the BB jump soon. Verizon, WorldPhone, BB…all is still pointing to the Storm as far as work use is concerned. So, if I had to choose between the curve, 8830, or Storm….well, you know that I’d go Storm. But, now I’m down 3 “must have” features: qwerty keyboard, WiFi, and FM radio. I guess my expectations are lowering in my old age.
Interestingly, reported today the Storm 9500 (the GSM brethren) is going to have a camera flash, where the 9530 (Verizon) will not. Wicked bizahh, I say.
